What is the best way to store my coffee to keep it fresh?

We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container at a stable temperature. A cupboard is a great place to store your coffee if you will consume it within 1 week. If you will take longer, we recommend storing it in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container.

How long does coffee last once the package is opened?

For the best flavor, we recommend consuming the coffee within 2-3 weeks after opening. Store it in an airtight container in the freezer between brews.

How long does coffee last if unopened?

A bag of coffee left unopened in its original packaging has a shelf life of 1 year.
A can of coffee left unopened in its original packaging has a shelf life of 2 years.

Will coffee harm me if I use it after the 'best before' date?

No, coffee will not harm you if consumed after the 'best before' date. However, the original smell, taste and flavor of the coffee bag or can will no longer be the same as when it was freshly packaged and sealed.

How fresh is my coffee?

Our coffee is roasted and packaged daily here in our facility in Vernon, California. And, we keep minimal floor stock to ensure your coffee is delivered as close to the roast date as possible.

Are the DF Single Serve cups compatible with my 2.0 Keurig machine?

Yes, our Single Serve cups are compatible with the 2.0 Keurig® machines as well as the older generation of Keurig® machines. Please Note: our Single Serve cups are not compatible with the Vue® machine.

How long will my order take to ship?

Online orders take 1 business day for processing:

  • If in CA, shipping is normally 1-3 business days
  • If outside of CA, shipping is normally 5-7 business days

Orders placed by phone will be processed immediately and will ship the next business day.
*Please Note: Some 10-12 oz. and 2 lb. bags are made to order items and may take an additional day to process and ship.

Where does your coffee come from?

When selecting coffees for the Don Francisco's brand, in addition to favoring high-grown Arabica coffees, we pay close attention to the climate, rainfall and soil conditions which also contribute to the flavor characteristics and quality of each coffee. We choose coffee from farmers we have ongoing relationships with in countries between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn mostly sourcing from Latin America, Southeast Asia, East Africa and Hawaii.

How much caffeine is my coffee?

The strength of a Coffee's taste has little to do with how much caffeine it contains. The types of coffee used in the blends and the strength of the brew are the determining factors.

Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans

  • Caffeine in a 5 fl.oz Cup of regular coffee ranges from 60mg to 180 mg.
  • Caffeine in a 1.5 fl oz Cup of espresso coffee ranges from 90 to 120 mg.
  • Caffeine is altered very little by the roasting process. It is readily water soluble at temperatures above 170 degrees F and is fully released into the finished beverage during brewing.

How is your coffee decaffeinated?

How is it possible to take the "kick" out of a cup of coffee? The FDA requires that coffee must have 97% of its caffeine removed to qualify as decaffeinated coffee.

There are four decaffeination methods, and they all generally use chemical and/or mechanical methods to draw the caffeine out of unroasted coffee beans.

A batch of unroasted coffee beans are soaked or steamed. The caffeine is then absorbed from the watery mixture by a filtering substance or by a chemical additive. If a chemical is used, it is evaporated or otherwise thoroughly removed from the water to ensure the beans are not contaminated. Then, the water (which contains the oils and flavors) is reintroduced to the coffee beans. The decaffeinated coffee beans are then roasted.

At Gavina, we use the methylene chloride method of decaffeination to preserve as much flavor as possible and ensure a delicious cup of decaf coffee for our customers.

What are the health benefits of coffee?

Many studies by leading medical research institutes have found substantial health benefits from drinking coffee:

  • Enhances exercise routine and sports performance
  • Small, frequent amounts of coffee improve mental alertness

Does your coffee contain GMOs or Gluten? (changed)

The short answer is no.

The National Coffee Association "is not aware of any GMO coffee in the marketplace." Additionally, all non-flavored coffees processed by F. Gavina & Sons, Inc. do not have any additives or flavors. Our non-flavored coffee products are flushed with nitrogen gas during packaging in order to displace oxygen and preserve freshness. All non-flavored coffee products across all F. Gavina & Sons, Inc. brands (i.E. Gavina Gourmet Coffee®, Don Francisco’s Jose’s®, and Cafe La Llave®) are GMO-free and do not contain any genetically modified components.

All the coffees roasted and packed in our plant are gluten free (Coffee beans are not a protein grain).
